Tech Tip - Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations

Since we have witnessed many presentations throughout the years, we understand that a seemingly innocent PowerPoint presentation can make or break a meeting. Image Audiovisuals has compiled a few tips on creating and delivering effective PowerPoint presentations:

Slide Design

  • Choose a professional simple design. If you are giving your presentation in a darkened room, choose a dark background with white text. If you are delivering a presentation in a lightened room, use a white background with dark text.

  • Use a simple font like Arial or Times New Roman. One thing to keep in mind that if you are using a computer with an older version of PowerPoint, it might not recognize newer fonts like Calibri.

  • Type the title slides in a 32-50 sized font and type bulleted lists in a 20-32 sized font.

  • Keep the slides simple by using no more than 7-10 lines of text per slide. Use phrases and keywords rather than whole sentences and paragraphs.

  • Use distracting graphics and sounds sparingly.

  • Ask questions in your slides. A short question can be very thought provoking.

bbbTechnical

  • Always save your PowerPoint file to a USB drive in case the Internet connection is slow or nonfunctional.

  • Ensure that all distracting automatic reminders, e-mail notifications, silly screensavers, etc., are disabled prior to your presentation.

  • Always have Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer on hand, just in case the meeting room's computer has an older version of PowerPoint on it.

  • Rehearse your motions to go along with each slide transition.

  • Create a PDF file of your presentation and make copies of it for distribution to audience members
