How is the H1N1 Outbreak Affecting the Meeting Industry?

There is good news for the meeting industry. Despite President Obama's recent declaration of a national emergency to deal with the outbreak of the H1N1 virus, our industry has yet to see adverse economic effects from it.

According to a survey recently released by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE), while companies do have concerns about the potential spread of the disease, the vast majority have no plans to alter travel plans for the rest of 2009 or throughout 2010. More specifically, 91 percent of travel managers indicated in the survey that H1N1 is not preventing them from scheduling meetings and conferences, and 96 percent of respondents said that their employees were not asking them to postpone trips or conferences.

The ACTE recently issued a statement urging temporary behavioral changes to reduce H1N1 Influenza's potential impact on meetings, including eliminating handshakes, increasing hand washing, frequently using hand sanitizers, and staying home at the onset of symptoms. We've heard that hand sanitizers are becoming a common sight at meetings these days!
