iMeet: The Meeting Industry Goes Mobile

Mobile technology, one of the hottest meeting technology trends of 2011, is definitely here to stay!

Mobile applications are providing new ways for meeting planners to stretch budgets, to interact with attendees, and to manage business activities.

Meeting planners are constantly on-the-go, so many of them prefer to lose bulky laptops in favor of smart phones or iPads. These devices are used for a variety of tasks, including lead exchange, networking, electronic ticketing, audience polling, surveys, notes distribution, video display, interactive conference programs, interactive exhibit guides, maps, speaker Q&A, and much more.

There are hundreds of new mobile phone apps for meeting planners, attendees, and exhibitors, and new ones are always in the pipeline.

Here are a few mobile applications that meeting planners are utilizing:

  • eMobile (by eTouches) is a new product that creates meeting-specific applications, including event schedules, attendee lists, contact information, agendas, and much more.

  • iLeads replaces traditional bar codes by giving meeting attendees the ability to enter their badge numbers into their iPads or iPhones, which pulls their contact information from the registration database. This is great for bypassing lines, for lead tracking, and for presentation customization.

  • iAnnotate allows attendees to download a meeting's PDF handouts to their iPads, take notes on them, and store them for future reference.
  • The DUB – Mobile Business Card Networking works with most smart phones to exchange electronic business cards. It also helps meeting attendees locate people near them at a conference, or send business cards via SMS or email. It also syncs with a phone's address book to update contacts.

  • The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center offers the myBCEC app to help its visitors navigate the facility and to provide information about local attractions and hotels.
