Tech Tip - Lapel Mic

Lavaliere mics, or lapel mics, are very popular among presenters, since they allow for professional, hands-free operation. The small wireless mics easily attach to clothing, so the speaker can worry about the presentation at hand, not the microphone.

The following tips are important to consider Lap Micwhen using a lapel or lavaliere mic:

  • The mic should be attached to the “mid-sternum,” but if this is not possible, it should be clipped to the opposite side of the body from the side of the stage. Thus, if the speaker is situated on “stage left,” the mic should be clipped to the right side of the body. The presenter should make it a habit to turn his or her whole body toward the audience versus just his head. This will prevent mic “cutout” caused by not speaking directly into the mic.
  • Presenters should always be aware of their clothing - avoid neckerchiefs, or other frilly attire that creates unnecessary distraction by rubbing against the mic head. Ties, button down shirts, and business jackets are ideal presentation clothing, since they offer optimal locations for mic attachment.
  • The lavaliere mic head is very sensitive, so presenters should avoid walking in front of, or underneath speakers with an open mic, since this causes unwelcome feedback. Presenters should always take note of speaker placement prior to their presentation, so they can avoid these problem areas.
