Turn Your Meetings Green
Since everything around us seems to be turning green this month, it is only natural that the meeting industry is following suit.
Since conventions and tradeshows are known to be one of the most wasteful industries out there, Image Audiovisuals has compiled a few ways to make your meetings greener.
- Host city and venue: To reduce unnecessary travel, select a host city that is centrally located to as many guests as possible. Choose a venue, such as the Colorado Convention Center, that is dedicated to facilitating green meetings.
- Handouts: Since handouts for hundreds (or thousands) of attendees can multiply quickly, print handouts on two sides of post-consumer recycled paper. When possible, do not date materials so you can reuse them. You should also consider using paperless technology to distribute your meeting materials. Guests can access them via mobile apps or the internet, which is convenient and efficient.
- Supplies: Collect and reuse attendees’ badge holders at the end of the conference. Consider foregoing plastic water bottles in lieu of water in pitchers or water coolers, which will also save you money. Use signage and other materials that can easily be reused or recycled.
- Recycle: Ensure that there are numerous well-marked recycle bins throughout the facility, and be sure to include their location on the facility map.
- Transportation: Choose venues near public transportation options and that are a close walking distance to hotels and restaurants.
- Leftovers: Donate leftover flowers, food, and decorations to local schools, nonprofit organizations, or soup kitchens. Select centerpieces and decorations that can be reused, such as living plants, or silk flowers.
- Green Meetings Council: Join your local chapter of the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) to learn how to green your meetings and events. The council offers access to cutting-edge information relevant to your community. GMIC Colorado, the second fully-formed chapter in the country, seeks to make Colorado one of the greenest regions for meetings and events.
The Colorado Convention Center is a leader in green meetings. It is committed to helping clients host conferences and events that work to increase its collective social responsibility. By remaining mindful of its impact on the environment and community, it believes that events can be produced without leaving a negative footprint. This is one of the reasons that Image Audiovisuals is proud to be the in-house AV provider of the Colorado Convention Center.
