The "Green" Issue
Let’s Turn the Meeting Industry Green!
Since everything around us seems to be turning “green,” it is only natural that the meeting industry is following suit. Conventions and tradeshows are known to be the second most wasteful industry in the United States. In fact, 2,500 attendees at a typical five-day conference will consume 90,000 cans or bottles, 75,000 cups and 87,500 napkins (Meeting Strategies Worldwide, 2003). Our industry must take action to reduce waste, recycle, and give back to our communities.
Why should you consider implementing green business practices? It makes good business sense, since it demonstrates that your company is committed to corporate responsibility, and to your environment. Green meetings also conserve resources, ultimately saving you money, improve efficiency, open new niche markets, and provide many public relations and community service opportunities. There is growing pressure to create sustainable meetings, and some meeting planners are even seeking out vendors and host cities that demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Image Audiovisuals is among the industry leaders in the Denver-area forming a local chapter of the Green Meeting Industry Council, a non-profit organization seeking to “transform the global meetings industry through sustainable practices which incorporate environmental considerations throughout all stages of a meeting in order to minimize the negative impact on the environment.” The Council is designed to provide educational resources to planners, suppliers, and venues that are adhering to sustainable meetings' high standards.
The Council has big plans for the future of green meetings, envisioning that they will become an accepted industry practice by 2020 that will positively contribute to the environment and to their host communities. The Council also hopes that green meetings will have zero net environmental effect by 2020.
As mentioned above, we are in the process of forming a Denver chapter of the Green Meeting Industry Council. If you are interested in joining, please contact Tiffany Hoambrecker at Visit Denver!
